Hull rendering coverage and enquiry information

The focus of this review site is Hull. No contractor's travel area has been confirmed yet, so treat this page as guidance on preparing an enquiry, not a promise that one can be accepted.

What to send

Start with the postcode and full address, then list the walls and the work you have in mind. Photographs taken from the ground of each complete wall help most; add closer shots of any crack, any area that sounds hollow, the sills and the foot of the wall. Say how the back of the house is reached, especially if access is through a shared passage or a neighbour's land.

Check the council and the conservation area

Hull City Council lists 27 conservation areas, from the Old Town and the Avenues and Pearson Park to Garden Village and Sutton Village, with a map of their boundaries, and uses Article 4 directions to control particular alterations in some areas. The city is surrounded by towns in the East Riding of Yorkshire, which has its own council and planning rules, so an address just outside the city boundary should be checked with that council instead.

Before you send it

Mention any planned windows, gutters or extension, since they affect the sequence of the work.

  1. Note the postcode and which walls need work.

  2. Photograph each wall and the access route from the ground.

  3. Record shared access, occupation and any related building work.

  4. Check the address against the conservation area map.

Listed-building entries

Kingston upon Hull built-up area

NHLE release 27 October 2026; December 2022 ONS boundary. Counts designation entries, not houses. A listing point does not define the legal extent of a listed property.

These records describe the area. A rendering survey still needs to establish the masonry, existing coatings and condition of your own walls. For a listed property or an address in a conservation area, check the proposed work with the responsible planning authority.

Local information

Housing, planning and access

Conservation-area boundaries

Hull’s council lists protected areas including the Old Town, Avenues and Pearson Park, and Garden Village. Its mapping service identifies the actual boundaries for an address check.

Hull City Council: conservation areas ↗

Article 4 directions

Hull uses Article 4 directions to control particular alterations in certain areas. The council distinguishes these controls from like-for-like work that does not materially change appearance.

Garden Village boundary features

The council’s appraisal register records controls affecting walls, gates and hedges in Garden Village. A boundary-wall rendering proposal should therefore be checked separately from the house façade.
